A WOMAN raped by her primary school headmaster in the 1970s is suing the state for damages.
Now aged in her 50s, the woman says she was a victim as a nine-year-old of Alan Michael Goodison, 70.
Goodison violated four girls, two of them sisters, aged between nine and 11, while acting as principal at schools in Victoria’s Gippsland and northeast regions between 1970 and 1973.
In May, Goodison was sentenced to 30 months’ jail, with a parole period of 20 months, after he pleaded guilty to four counts of indecent assault and one act of gross indecency to a girl aged under 16.
In a statement of claim lodged in the County Court, the woman says Goodison repeatedly exposed himself to her and on one occasion raped her while she was waiting to go home on the school bus.
She said she reported the rape but no investigation or proper inquiry was conducted.
As a result of Goodison’s attacks, the woman says she suffers post-traumatic stress disorder, has had long periods where she was unable to work and continues to incur medical expenses.
The woman says her abuse was caused by the negligence of the state and its employees in failing to ensure Goodison was an appropriate person to be a teacher, failing to adequately supervise him, and allowing him to continue to teach when they knew or ought to have known that he was abusing his students.
She said the state also failed to ensure she and other students were aware they should report inappropriate behaviour or to have such a system in place, to properly instruct teachers in their professional standards or review them to ensure they acted professionally, and to provide her with any support or counselling.
In sentencing Goodison to a maximum of 30 months in jail, Judge Richard Maidment said he was confined to the sentencing legislation of the day.
The crimes allowed for a five-year maximum jail sentence at the time he committed his offences.
The County Court heard the then father of two girls committed his disgusting crimes during a period in which his wife give birth to another daughter and a son.
Each of his young victims was abused either in class or the staffroom. One little girl screamed out as he raped her.
Judge Maidment said Goodison had absolute power over his victims and displayed a “gross abuse of trust”.
