Anti-Rape Protest 4

The march by the ANCWL follows the brutal killing and rape of a five-year-old girl in Phokeng (SABC)

Rustenburg in North West has the country’s highest number of rape cases, the African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) in the Bojanala region said on Saturday.

Women are being abused on a daily basis… Our area has recently witnessed abduction and brutal killings of women. Many women, in some instances the elderly, have been raped throughout the Rustenburg Local Municipality jurisdiction,” ANC North West Provincial Executive Committee member, Joyce Mashishi-Ntsime, said at the league’s march against women abuse in Phokeng outside Rustenburg.

The ANCWL marched to the Phokeng Police Station to hand over a memorandum highlighting the plight of abused women. The march followed the brutal killing and rape of a five-year-old girl in Phokeng. The girl was reportedly abducted, raped, and killed.

A report released by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) early in August indicated that one in four women living in Rustenburg was raped during her lifetime. According to the report, 95% of the women raped never told a medical professional about the incident.

Mashishi-Ntsime said laws had been enacted to protect women, but the ANCWL was not happy with the implementation of these.

The league also lamented the “soft release” of perpetrators, the loss of cases, and poor collection of evidence by police.

In the memorandum, the ANCWL recommended the establishment of a Community Police Forum (CPF) in all areas of Rustenburg, regular patrols in all areas, and that murder and rape suspects should not be granted bail.

Rustenburg Mayor Mpho Khunou said the town was becoming a “human trafficking capital”
Receiving the memorandum, Rustenburg policing cluster commander Arthur Adams said the new struggle women now faced was abuse.

“I want to see you walking with me in Klopper, Heystek, and Ridder Streets, removing young girls from the streets where they are being abused…,” he said. These streets are notorious for prostitution and drug trafficking.

Rustenburg Mayor Mpho Khunou said the town was becoming a “human trafficking capital”.

“We cannot wait and allow human and drug trafficking to continue in our city. In fact, we must organise a march against human trafficking in September."
