6-year-old girl raped by sweeper
A six-year-old girl was raped by a sweeper of a night shelter on Saturday evening, barely 200 metres from the Parliament Street police station. Police said the girl stayed along with her grandmother in the same shelter where the accused worked.
DCP (New Delhi district) Vijay Singh said a case has been registered under sections 376 and several sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act against the accused.
Police said the girl was playing outside the shelter when the accused took her to a park nearby.
He was caught red-handed by locals. He was arrested from the spot and sent to 14-days’ judicial custody.
“Ten days ago, the accused began working as a sweeper at the shelter. He was not appointed by anyone. On Saturday evening, the girl was playing outside the shelter when the accused took her to a nearby park on the pretext of giving her chocolates. He then raped her,” an officer said.
Locals in the area were alerted by the girl’s screams.
“They found the accused assaulting the girl and trashed him. They then made a PCR call and informed police about the incident. The girl later told her grandmother about the incident, who in turn lodged an FIR,” the officer said.
Police said the girl and her 11-year-old sister have been staying with their grandmother in the shelter for the past six months.
DCP Singh said the beat constable of the area had told the girl’s grandmother several times to send the girls to their parents’ house but she had refused.
