In yet another heinous instance of violence against women in Maharashtra, a 16-year-old set herself ablaze to escape a gang rape in the village of Yavat in Daund Taluk.
The girl, suffering more than 60 per cent burns, is presently battling for life at Pune’s Sassoon hospital.
The grisly incident occurred earlier in the week on Wednesday, when a gang of men led by Pramod Thorat brutally assaulted the victim and her mother following an altercation over the construction of a concrete pole on a disputed piece of land where the victim lives.
According to the Yavat police station authorities, Thorat was trying to set up the pole in the open space outside the victim’s house and attempting to fence-off this area.
Reportedly, this patch of land, which belongs to the government, has been frequently encroached upon by villagers and has been the scene of several disputatious quarrels.
Things came to a head when the victim’s mother objected to Thorat’s fencing of the area outside her house.
An enraged Thorat and his accomplices verbally abused the woman and dealt her a savage beating.
Advancers warned
As the girl attempted to save her mother, two men assaulted her and dragged her into the house with the intention of raping her. Sensing this, the girl grabbed hold of a kerosene canister and warned her advancers that she would immolate herself if they stepped any closer.
According to the FIR filed, the men mocked at her which then compelled the girl to set herself ablaze.
While her unnerved assaulters took flight, the mother rushed her daughter to Sassoon hospital in Pune.
The police have arrested Thorat and six others and booked them under sections 147 (rioting), 354 (assaulting a woman to outrage her modesty), 323 (assault), 504 (insult to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 452 (trespass) of the Indian Penal Code and under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012.

The rape victim, who worked as a domestic help, was abducted from her residence in DLF Phase V in Gurgaon on the night of April 1 and later locked up in a room in Wazirabad area. She was then raped in that room for three days; she was not provided any food at all during her ordeal.

The woman was brutally assaulted as well and she suffered multiple injuries. According to Gurgaon ACP (Crime) Rajesh Kumar, on Friday night, the local police was alerted that a woman was being held captive in a room in Wazirabad locality adjacent to Sector 57. A police team raided the place and found that the room was locked from outside. On hearing the woman's scream from inside the room, the police broke the door and rescued her. Narrating her ordeal, the woman told the police that on April 1, around 11 pm, five persons - Dalip alias Billu, Roop Chand, Vikas, Morsim and Akil - knocked on the door of her residence in DLF Phase V.
