20-yr-old girl gang-raped, hanged in Etah

A 20-year-old Dalit woman was gang-raped and murdered by miscreants belonging to an upper caste in Jalesar area of Etah district.

The accused are believed to have hanged the body from a tree after the murder to make it appear like a suicide, according to police sources.

Police have registered an FIR and launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.

According to police, the incident took place in the wee hours of Friday in Sikandarpur Madhi village in Jalesar when the four men dragged the girl out of her house to a field and raped her, and then strangled her to death. To avoid being found out, the accused hanged her body from a tree in the same field and fled from the spot.

The victim's family was not at home at the time. Her parents had taken the girl's brother to a nearby hospital in the evening because the victim's brother had damaged his hand in a wheat thrasher on Thursday night.

The family could not find their daughter when they returned home in the morning. When they started searching for her, they were told that their daughter was found hanging from a tree in the nearby field.

The victim's body was taken down and sent for postmortem after senior administrative and police officials reached the spot and assured her relatives of taking stern action against the culprits.

Jalesar circle officer Kalyan Singh said, "An FIR has been registered against four people. Two of them have been identified as brothers Ankit and Amit. Kailash and Praveen are the two others. All are in the age group of 22 to 25. All of them are currently absconding."

A similar incident was reported from Kasganj district on March 31, 2015 when a 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by two young men. Her body was found under a tree, nearly a kilometer away from her home in Kishorpur area of Kasganj district. Police later arrested the accused.

AHMEDABAD: A 22-year-old woman has approached Viramgam rural police station on Friday accusing her two uncles of sexually exploiting her for over three years.

The girl had given birth to a girl child recently who was killed by the duo to hide the exploitation. Police have arrested one of the accused in the case.

Gujarat's sex ratio stands at 886 females per 1,000 males. But, in certain parts of the state, this is further skewed and experts point out that the skewed sex ratio is one of the reasons for the rise in crime against women. Police said that both the accused in the case in early fifties are unmarried.

According to police, Bhanu (name changed), is a native of Jalampur, around 20 kilometers from Viramgam. She had got married four years ago in a nearby town but due to differences, the couple separated.

As Bhanu's parents are mentally unstable and are frequently kept at rehabilitation institutions with family support, her two uncles involved in farming offered to give her shelter. They had argued that the girl could help them in farming activities and could earn livelihood.

"Her uncles — Jeram, 52, and Jadav, 49, — had not got married. Soon after the girl moved to their farm in outskirts of the village, the duo started exploiting her.

The duo raped her repeatedly at various places inside the house and at farm. She was not allowed to contact others and was forbidden from moving around in the village without one of the uncles accompanying her," said a Viramgam rural police official.

Bhanu had got pregnant due to rapes last year and had delivered a baby girl earlier this week. The brothers were afraid that the fingers would point towards them as perpetrators of the crime.

Thus, when Bhanu was returning home with the child in a chhakda, one of the brothers strangulated the child. Bhanu realized it when she took the child for feeding.

The brothers forcibly took the child from her and after wrapping her in a polythene bag, buried her in nearby bushes on the road despite protests from Bhanu.

Viramgam Rural police sub-inspector S N Ramani said that the killing of the child was the last straw that prompted Bhanu to move out and approach police with her cousin for a complaint on Friday.

"We've sent the girl for medical examination and started search for the spot where the child was buried. Jeram has been arrested in connection with the case. Once the child is found, she would be sent for DNA testing to confirm the parentage. Search for the other accused is on," he said.
