LUCKNOW: In a grim reminder of the infamous Badaun incident, a teenage Dalit girl was raped and her body was later found hanging from a tree in Nighasan area of Lakhimpur district, police said on Thursday.
The body of the 16-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree on Wednesday morning near Taparpurwa village in the district, about 130 km from state capital Lucknow.
The incident led to protests as local leaders from different political outfits who held the Samajwadi Party government responsible for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
Police, who initially tried to dismiss the case as that of suicide, registered a case of rape and murder once it was established in the post-mortem examination that she was raped.
In his complaint, the girl's father has named two local youths as accused.
"A case of rape and murder has been lodged against Manoj and Dharmesh," said Inspector Ram Kumar Yadav, in charge of the Nighasan police station. Incidentally, the police station was in news when body of a girl was found hanging from a tree on its compound and a constable was held in this connection.
Kheri SP Arvind Sen Yadav also said the police has arrested the two youth.
In May 2014, two cousins were found hanging from a tree in Badaun and it was alleged that they were hanged after being raped. However, CBI later filed a closure report in the case saying that the girls had committed suicide.
"The entire state has turned into a jungle raj. People are feeling insecure. Crime graph has shot up. We wanted to raise the issue in the state Assembly, but the government is avoiding a debate on it," said senior BSP leader Swami Prasad Maurya.
BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said the government made tall promises of women's security, but has failed to fulfill it. All its schemes like 1090 women helpline have failed, he said.
