PORN REWIRING OF THE YOUNG BRAINS

Internet porn has become a part of society. With a couple of keywords and the click of a mouse, everyone can watch degrading and violent videos. Porn culture is rewiring the brains of our children. Pornography is “warping young people’s views of what is normal or acceptable behaviour”.

Two Halifax psychotherapists say they’re treating an increasing number of young men who can't feel emotional attachment to sexual partners after watching years of internet pornography.
Mary and Peter Goodman were prompted to speak publicly about their concerns in the wake of the Dalhousie University dentistry student Facebook scandal and other headline-grabbing stories of misogyny.
They say in the last 10 years that more men between 25 and 35 years of age are coming for therapy because they are unable to feel close to their partners.
“When they start to open up and talk more freely about it, essentially what they’re saying is they really don’t care about the person they’re with at all. But they want to,” Peter Goodman says.
These men have become emotionally walled-off from partners as their brains are rewired, Goodman says.
The problem for some men who watch large amounts of porn is, as time goes by, they need more stimulation and aggressive porn in order to get aroused.
“I think we’re at a tipping point with this phenomenon,” Mary Goodman says.
The Goodmans, who operate EastWind Health Associates in Halifax, say the problem is treatable through therapy.
Peter Goodman says some men initially deny viewing any porn online, but later reveal they do. He says they’re not lying; internet porn has simply become so much a part of society that they don’t view themselves as “hard core” users.
There’s been increasing concern in recent years over the ease at which young people can access porn. With a couple of keywords and the click of a mouse, internet users can watch degrading and violent videos.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said in 2013 that pornography was "corroding childhood, and introduced a plan for internet providers to block access to porn unless customers specifically opted-in.
Closer to home, Tri-County Women’s Centre in Yarmouth recently hosted a conference called The Impact of Growing up in our Porn Culture.

More than 1,000 children under the age of ten have been accused of serious crimes in Manchester alone over the last three years, but were never prosecuted because they are too young. The figure includes boys as young as seven and eight who have been questioned on suspicion of rape. Similar cases have emerged in North Wales.
The cases have come to light thanks to Freedom of Information requests lodged by the Daily Mail. They include a seven year old Manchester boy who was accused of raping a girl under the age of 13, and an eight year old boy accused of raping a girl under 16. A further rape claim was also registered wherein the accused was a six year old boy at the time, although the case is thought to have taken place over 40 years ago.
In North Wales, two nine year old boys were also accused of rape within the last two years. Thirty one children in North Wales were also suspected of causing actual bodily harm, the youngest being a six year old girl.
Other cases include a six year old boy suspected of possessing cannabis, and a nine year old girl accused of carrying a knife or blade at school. Children under ten are considered by law to be too young to be held criminally responsible for wrongdoing.
Despite the decades old case of an under ten being accused of rape, a spokesman from children’s charity the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) was quick to lay the blame on porn, and call for “prevention.”
Des Mannion of NSPCC Wales said pornography was “warping young people’s views of what is normal or acceptable behaviour”.
“Prevention has to be the key and that means recognising warning signs early and taking swift action,” he added. “For very young children we have to question the environment in which they are growing up that has led to them behaving in this way. It could be that they have seen sexual activity that they are just too young to understand and are copying what they’ve seen.”
