A Class 6 student at a government high school in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu was raped and murdered by unidentified people. Her body was dumped in a mango orchard near Maachanur village in the district. There were deep cut injuries on her throat and neck and her limbs were tied.
The 11-year-old girl was last seen with a Class 10 boy of the same school around 1pm on Monday while they were returning home after appearing for an examination at their school.
The girl had not returned home till evening and her parents launched a hunt for her. On Tuesday morning, they learnt that a body was found at a mango orchard. They rushed to the spot and were shattered to find her body with deep cut injuries.
A police team led by superintendent of police P K Senthil Kumari visited the crime spot and made preliminary investigations. Forensic experts combed the crime spot for vital clues. A sniffer dog was pressed into service.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Adukkamparai government general hospital for postmortem.
Police suspect the involvement of people known to the girl in the crime. They were of the strong opinion that not more than two people were involved in the crime.
Her relative, A Murugan, said he spotted her with the Class 10 boy returning home on Monday and offered them lift. "The boy refused and suggested that they would walk home. Since the boy also resides near her house, I left," Murugan said.
The Class 10 boy, who was last seen with the girl, had been missing since Tuesday morning. The boy, whose name was withheld by the police, claimed ignorance when her parents questioned him about her on Monday night.
