INDIA: 25.000 RAPES

Union home minister Rajnath Singh informed Parliament that 25,000 cases of rape were registered across the country in 2014, calling it a “national shame”. In a suo motu statement in the Rajya Sabha, the home minister promised that the government would initiate whatever steps are required to ensure safety of women and children in the country.
“Friday’s case has further pained me. The government of India strongly condemns this dastardly act. It will be ensured that all necessary steps are taken to bring the offender to justice,” Singh said, referring to the Friday’s Delhi cab rape.
While conceding that there is a need to do more, Singh said the government after coming to power, has taken a number of steps to check crime against women. “We have identified 255 sensitive locations/roads in the Capital. Police vans patrol the areas. CCTV cameras have been installed in 200 buses and 3,707 public places and 1,518 more cameras will be installed,” he said.
Earlier cutting across party lines, the Upper House members criticised the government for failing to ensure safety and security of women in the country.
Taking a dig at the government, Congress’ Anand Sharma that while it banned Uber services, a cabinet minister criticised the action against the cab provider. “You people can sit together and arrive at a consensus,” he said.
Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien wanted to know the concrete steps initiated by the government for safety of women since the Nirbhaya incident.
Bassi briefs home ministry
Delhi Police commissioner BS Bassi also briefed the home minister on Tuesday on the probe into the rape incident of the young executive.
Bassi is in a spot over the protests by AAP workers in front of Singh’s residence on Monday morning, say home ministry sources.
“Top home ministry officials have been asked to send a strong message to the commissioner that he should be in control of the situation and the Delhi Police should set an example for other police forces in the country,” said a home ministry official.
