U.K. Government Rejects Automatic Porn Blocking

Pornography will not be blocked automatically from British internet subscribers, the U.K.  government has decided. There had been calls for a system whereby Internet service providers would have had to put filters on all connections unless subscribers contacted them and asked for them to be switched off.
The Home Office and the Department of Education in a joint report, however, said that a public consultation had revealed little enthusiasm among parents for the idea of automatic filtering by Internet service providers (ISPs), according to The Independent.
“There was no great appetite among parents for the introduction of default filtering of the internet by their ISP: only 35% of the parents who responded favoured that approach,” it said.
The report said ministers had been guided by expert advice that default filtering could create a false sense of security as not all harmful content is blocked, and it does not encourage parents to learn about keeping their children safe online.
“Warning signs, water wings and lifeguards are all useful aids to safety in swimming pools, but they don’t prevent all accidents by themselves, and children still need to have swimming lessons and be alert to possible dangers,” it said.
The report suggests that filters can help to block some harmful content, but they do not prevent cyber-bullying, “sexting” or online grooming. U.K. government ministers are now asking ISPs to “actively encourage” the use of parental controls in households where there are children.
